Or the alphabet soup of credentials after someone\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t do titles,\u201d he says. \u201cA certificate doesn\u2019t mean a hill of beans if you aren\u2019t competent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ISwinden is the founder and owner of Global Hazmat, a company that\u2019s been shaking up the way people think about hazardous materials training for nearly 30 years. And in that time, he\u2019s seen the same pattern again and again:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Training gets done.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Boxes get ticked.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>And still people aren\u2019t prepared.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cSafety and hazmat are often very separate, but they shouldn\u2019t be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swinden\u2019s mission is to close that gap. And it starts with how we teach.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">FROM FRUSTRATION TO FOUNDATION<\/h2>\n<p>Swinden didn\u2019t start Global Hazmat because it sounded like a good business idea. He started it because he couldn\u2019t take another day of spinning his wheels under <strong><a href=\"\/fr\/blog\/safety-reflects-leadership\/\">leadership<\/a><\/strong> that didn\u2019t care about outcomes, or people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realised I couldn\u2019t work for people who didn\u2019t have a clear purpose. So I left. I said, I\u2019m going to go off and become your competitor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Armed with real-world experience and a stubborn refusal to cut corners, Swinden launched Global Hazmat as a one-man show. The company\u2019s now a leader in hazardous materials training, known for its practical, results-driven approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing things the right way isn\u2019t optional. The incident forced the evacuation of major retailers and homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt came down to people not understanding that waste has the same hazards as product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t a failure of policy. It was a failure of education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompetency is everything. Show me you can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE ISN\u2019T A NICE-TO-HAVE &#8211; IT\u2019S ESSENTIAL<\/h2>\n<p>Swinden\u2019s approach to training is rooted in consequence. The real world doesn\u2019t care how well someone performed on a quiz. It cares whether they know how to act under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou learn from error, but only if you choose to. That\u2019s where training needs to start: with the decision to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s seen audits where over 80% of shipping documents were wrong. He\u2019s been called into situations where there was no documentation at all. No compliance. No plan. Just risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that important\u2026 until someone gets hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Training can\u2019t be reactive. It has to build habits that hold up when the pressure\u2019s on.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">BUILDING A CULTURE, NOT JUST A COURSE<\/h2>\n<p>Swinden doesn\u2019t just teach rules, he challenges companies to change how they think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers often mandate training for their employees but don\u2019t train themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result? A culture where safety is seen as someone else\u2019s job.<\/p>\n<p>Swinden flips that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about one training session. It\u2019s about creating a mindset, every day, every level, every role.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">FWHERE TECH HELPS AND WHERE IT HURTS<\/h2>\n<p>Swinden welcomes digital tools and automation, especially in documentation. But he\u2019s wary of shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m all for anything that helps, so long as it doesn\u2019t undermine competence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Digital doesn\u2019t mean safer. It only works when it supports understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest issue we see is confusion between being certified and being competent.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">ADVICE FOR EDUCATORS, TRAINERS, AND SAFETY LEADS<\/h2>\n<p>Swinden\u2019s advice to those designing training?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Teach the \u201cwhy,\u201d not just the \u201cwhat.\u201d <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reinforce real-world decision-making. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow up with observation and feedback. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And for learners?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk questions. Find a mentor. Listen. You can\u2019t learn this stuff from a slide deck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Degrees, titles, and eLearning modules all have their place. But they\u2019re just the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to <strong><a href=\"\/fr\/blog\/how-to-make-drastic-changes-to-your-safety-culture\/\">build safety culture<\/a><\/strong>? You need people who want to learn and leaders who know how to teach.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #00548f!important; font-size: 30px;\">ONE PERSON. BIG RIPPLE<\/h2>\n<p>Kevin Swinden didn\u2019t set out to build a training empire. He just wanted people to stop getting hurt because of what they didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Global Hazmat\u2019s reach spans industries and borders.
