What is Confined Space Competent Person (CAN)?

The Confined Space Safety Training Course provides workers with a thorough understanding of hazards, procedures, and CSA-compliant requirements for safe entry and rescue in confined spaces. Learners gain knowledge on identifying confined spaces, operating essential equipment, conducting atmospheric testing, and following proper entry protocols. The course also covers hazard recognition, risk controls, and the basics of emergency rescue planning to support safe and confident work in potentially dangerous environments.

Présentation du cours

The Confined Spaces Safety Training course is designed to help workers understand the hazards, procedures, and regulatory requirements associated with working in or around confined spaces. Built to meet key CSA standards, this program prepares learners to safely identify confined spaces, operate essential equipment, monitor atmospheric conditions, and follow proper entry procedures.

The course covers the inspection and use of basic equipment, the importance of atmospheric testing, the steps required for safe entry, and how to recognize and avoid hazards such as IDLH atmospheres. Learners also review rescue techniques and the critical role of emergency preparedness. Practice quiz questions are included throughout to reinforce learning and prepare participants for the final written exam. A practical evaluation checklist is provided for employers in accordance with regulatory expectations.

This training aligns with major Canadian safety standards, including:

  • CSA Z1006-10 (R2015) – Management of Work in Confined Spaces
  • CSA Z94.4-11 – Selection, Use, and Care of Respirators
  • CSA Z180.1-13 – Compressed Breathing Air and Systems
  • CSA Z259.12-11 – Fall Protection
  • CSA Z259.2.5-12 – Fall Arresters and Vertical Lifelines
  • CSA Z259.100-12 – Full Body Harnesses
  • CSA Z259.2.2-14 – Self-Retracting Devices
  • CSA Z460-13 – Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout)
  • CSA W117.2-94 – Safety in Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes

APERÇU DU SUJET

Confined spaces present hazards that are often hidden, unpredictable, and potentially fatal. Atmospheric dangers, engulfment risks, restricted movement, and mechanical hazards require workers to follow strict procedures to remain safe. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of confined space work, ensuring that workers, supervisors, and competent persons can perform their duties safely and confidently.
