Weights and Dimensions

What is Weights and Dimensions?

Commercial vehicle safety is about more than just driving skill, it’s about knowing and following the rules that keep roads safe. With millions of commercial vehicles sharing Canada’s highways, understanding weight and dimension regulations is critical to reducing risks and staying compliant. This course breaks down federal and provincial standards, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and practical requirements for safe operations. Perfect for drivers, carriers, and safety professionals who want to avoid penalties and operate with confidence.

Présentation du cours

Canada has over 1.3 million registered commercial vehicles on the road, a small fraction of the nation’s 26.3 million motor vehicles, but they contribute significantly to overall traffic risks. Though commercial vehicles represent only 5% of traffic, they are involved in about 8% of collisions and nearly 20% of fatal crashes. Their vital role in transporting goods and passengers makes safety standards and compliance with commercial vehicle weights and dimensions regulations essential.

This training explores federal and provincial/territorial rules on commercial vehicle weights and dimensions in Canada. Learners will examine requirements for length, width, height, and weight while gaining a clear understanding of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which standardizes many regulations nationwide.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why compliancewith weight and dimension rules is crucial for safe operations
  • Recognize risks and penalties for oversize or overweight vehicles
  • Compare and calculate maximum legal load capacities
  • Understand how the MOU applies across provinces and territories
  • Access local regulations on vehicle weights and dimensions
  • Identify designated highway restrictions
  • Recognize enforcement measures for non-compliance
