Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS)
What Is Behaviour-Based Safety?
For every injury that occurs in the workplace, there may be a multitude of near misses, a clear signal that we need to focus not just on the major incidents, but on the day-to-day behaviours of everyone in the organization. By digging deeper and exploring the actions that lead to these near misses, we can discover the core attitudes and conduct affecting safety in the workplace. The biggest challenge every workplace faces is at-risk behaviours. This makes behaviour-based safety the greatest opportunity for positive change in any organization.
Behavior-based safety creates a partnership between management and workers that focuses on behaviour in relation to work. It encourages workers to help each other be safe by calling out at-risk behaviours and encouraging safe behaviours, effectively creating a culture of safety.
