What does EHS stand for?
EHS stands for Environment, Health, and Safety. In Canadian workplaces, EHS refers to the systems, policies, procedures, and activities used to protect workers, the public, the environment, and the organization from operational risk. “Environment” covers areas such as spills, emissions, waste, and environmental compliance. “Health” includes occupational health concerns such as exposure, fatigue, ergonomics, mental health, and workplace illness prevention. “Safety” focuses on preventing injuries, incidents, equipment failures, and unsafe work conditions. For safety managers in high-risk industries, EHS is not just a compliance function. It is a practical framework for identifying hazards, training workers, managing corrective actions, documenting due diligence, and improving operational performance.
